When Invisalign was first introduced as an alternative to the traditional metal braces, it made a huge impact. Suddenly, people who were unable to get braces in their youth could have the beautiful smile they always wanted – and no one would ever know they had braces on.

This was a great option for adults who were afraid that a mouthful of metal would adversely impact their interactions at work or in social situations. It meant that they could correct a range of dental problems without any eating restrictions or a constant barrage of questions about “why do you have braces now”?

And recently we’ve seen that there really isn’t an age cap for Invisalign.

What if you’re already retired? What if you don’t plan on going out to meet new people? Is it still worth your time to begin straightening your teeth?

The simple answer is: of course it is. You’re never too old to improve your dental situation. Are you still planning on smiling? Still want healthy teeth and gums? Then any improvements are worth it – no matter how old you are.

How It Works

We’ve gone into detail on Invisalign before, so for now we’ll just say that the Invisalign procedure involves a series of custom-made aligners that are comfortable and barely noticeable. They are most often used to correct dental issues like:

  • Overbites
  • Under bites
  • Cross bites
  • Over crowding
  • Gaps in teeth
  • Open bites

The Invisalign Opportunity

When a lot of people reach their senior years, they often begin to think that braces and other cosmetic procedures are out of the question – that it’s somehow meant only for young people.

But lately, more patients that are over the age of 50 are looking for orthodontic treatments.

Why? Because more people than ever before are keeping their teeth their entire lives.

It wasn’t that long ago that dentures were just an accepted part of getting older. Now, with all the recent developments in technology and dental care, you’re going to have your natural teeth much longer.

So if you’re going to keep them, let’s keep them in the best shape possible.

Does Invisalign Work with Older Teeth?

Your age doesn’t have much of an impact on whether or not you can receive Invisalign treatments. In general, if your gums and teeth are healthy, we can straighten them out.

However, if your teeth have actually started to shift out of position, then that might indicate another problem that we need to address before we begin working on the cosmetic angle. Still, as long as you don’t have any active periodontal issues, this should be a valid option for you.

A Small Thing Leads to Big Changes

Invisalign created a way to correct dental problems without getting in the way of our day-to-day routines. You don’t have to give up your favorite foods and drinks because you will just remove your aligners when you eat. Also, as you progress through the different aligners, the changes are much more subtle, which will minimize discomfort.

More than a Great Smile

Straightening your teeth – at any age – is about more than just a better smile. There are also health reasons for a correct bite. Cross bites and misalignments often lead to more plaque buildup from food getting stuck between teeth. This, in turn, can lead to periodontal disease.

The old braces may have the stigma of being something for all those Jr. High and High School kids, but modern Invisalign aligners have made it possible for you to get a beautiful, healthy smile at any age.
